One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. Thanks to advances in technology, early detection and increased awareness, the survival rates for breast cancer have continued to rise in recent years. Since 1990, mammography has reduced breast cancer-related deaths by nearly 40 percent.

Detection
The greatest benefit of breast cancer screening is when women have yearly mammograms beginning at age 40. A mammogram is a noninvasive x-ray that checks breasts for cancer and potential abnormalities. Mammograms have shown to reduce breast cancer deaths by detecting breast cancer early, when it is most treatable. Riverside offers 3D mammography, which provides advanced detection to help catch breast cancer in its earliest stages. In addition, Riverside offers automated breast ultrasound (ABUS) in conjunction with mammograms for women with dense breast tissue. Women who have been told they have dense breasts should talk with their primary care provider to see if they qualify for ABUS.

Symptoms
Breast cancer symptoms vary, but some of the most common signs to be on the lookout for are:

•A mass or lump on or inside the breast, which may feel as small as a pea
•Skin changes like swelling or redness on one or both breasts
•Change in breast size or shape (one or both breasts)
•Changes in nipple appearance (one or both nipples)
•Nipple discharge –other than breast milk
•New skin dimpling

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is important to speak with your doctor right away. Riverside reminds you to take charge of your health and schedule your annual screening mammogram today. Early detection saves lives.
