Advanced Robotic Lung Biopsy System at Riverside Healthcare
Riverside Healthcare is the first in the area to offer a minimally invasive approach to lung biopsies. Our skilled physicians, paired with the Ion by Intuitive, are championing a new way to detect lung cancer quickly and more precisely.
The new Ion device is a leading-edge robot that helps obtain lung tissue samples from deeper portions of the lung with less invasiveness than traditional methods. This technology prevents patients from needing multiple lung biopsies and reduces the risk of complications compared to more invasive approaches because of the unmatched precision the Ion provides.

With Lung cancer, time to intervention is critical. The Ion system provides clinical confidence to get early answers and decreases the wait time for our patients to receive treatment. This clinical advancement at Riverside Healthcare allows for a shorter medical journey with less of an impact on quality of life.
Understanding the Ion Procedure
The Ion utilizes a catheter that can move 180° in any direction. This, paired with computer software from Ion, can create a path that guides the physician to the patient’s lung nodule. The physician, still the control, can move the robot through small, difficult-to-navigate airways that may include tight bends to reach all 18 segments of the lungs.
Once the catheter has reached the lung nodule, a flexible biopsy needle passes through the catheter to locate, biopsy and mark lung nodules for surgical resection. Minimizing two procedures to only one for the patient.
This minimally invasive procedure is completed without incisions on the patient’s exterior. This assists with the patient’s ability to recover, as there are fewer incisions made, less trauma for the patient’s lungs, less risk of infection, less scarring and a shorter amount of time spent at the hospital. All of this contributes to our patients getting back to their lives quickly.
