Pancreatic Cancer
Though pancreatic cancer only accounts for about 3 percent of all cancers in the U.S., it is particularly dangerous because the symptoms are often silent until the disease has progressed.
The specialists at the Riverside Cancer Institute are committed to bringing the latest early detection and treatment options to the Kankakee, Bourbonnais, Frankfort, Watseka and surrounding Illinois and Western Indiana communities we serve. Our multi-skilled team – including endocrinologists, medical and radiation oncologists, surgeons and more – will work closely together with you to create a personal plan to wellness.

About Pancreatic Cancer
Pancreatic cancer begins in the tissues of your pancreas — the pear-shaped organ that lies behind your stomach, aiding in digestion and helping your body process sugar.
95 percent of pancreatic cancer begins in the cells that line the ducts of the pancreas. This type of cancer is called pancreatic adenocarcinoma or pancreatic exocrine cancer.
Pancreatic cancer is slightly more common in men than in women, usually occurring after age 45. It is not exactly clear what causes the disease, though certain risk factors may increase your risk, including diabetes, smoking and poor diet.
Signs and symptoms of pancreatic cancer often don't occur until the disease is advanced. They may include:
- Pain in the upper abdomen that radiates to your back
- Loss of appetite or unintended weight loss
- Depression
- New-onset diabetes
- Blood clots
- Fatigue
- Yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
Prevention
The average lifetime risk of pancreatic cancer is about 1 in 63 for men, and 1 in 65 for women. But each person’s chances of getting this cancer can be affected by certain risk factors.
Studies have shown that cigarette smoking may double the risk for pancreatic cancer when compared to non-smokers. Riverside is committed to helping you kick the habit for good and enjoy a longer, healthier life. Take the first step with our Freedom from Smoking program. You’ll find proven, evidence-based tools and all the support you need to succeed.
Up to 10 percent of pancreatic cancers may also be caused by inherited DNA changes. If you have a family history of pancreatic cancer or genetic syndromes, our Cancer Screening and Risk Assessment program can offer the answers you need. One of our genetic counselors will help you determine your risk and, if needed, coordinate testing and any other follow-up steps.
Detection & Diagnosis
Pancreatic cancer’s tendency to spread silently makes it one of the most difficult to diagnose early. If you think you may be at increased risk, or are showing any symptoms, it’s important to see your doctor as soon as possible. Riverside offers a full range of imaging options, including the latest in CT, MRI and ultrasound, to help make a pancreatic cancer diagnosis. We also use endoscopic ultrasound, a less invasive way to take tissue samples compared to surgical biopsies.
Personalized Treatment
If you’ve been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, we know how overwhelming that can feel. But you can rest assured you have some the region’s best experts in your corner. Together, we’ll create a personalized treatment plan, which may include surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination. We specialize in the latest options to remove the cancer, slow its growth or dramatically improve quality of life. And you have access to leading-edge cancer clinical trials close to home.
