As a Level II Trauma Center, Riverside is involved in Community Trauma Prevention services. Trauma is a leading cause of death of the young and most injuries are preventable. Nurses from the ED conduct programs at local high schools that address these. ED Nurses along with staff from Riverside Ambulance, local fire departments and coroners conduct reenactments of automobile crashes. The ED staff is also involved in teaching parents about other safety issues with their children, including bike safety, distracted driving, bleeding control, poison control, water safety, and custom safety classes.

Trauma Prevention Courses & Events

Riverside offers a full range of programs and resources to help reduce traumatic injuries and save lives. All classes and events can be tailored to the needs of your group and are free.

  • "Stop the Bleed" Training - Riverside ED has Stop the Bleed instructors certified by the American College of Surgeons. Bleeding is the number one cause of preventable death in trauma. This class teaches bystanders how to identify life-threatening bleeding and how to stop it. This class is interactive and hands-on. Participants learn how to use tourniquets and pack wounds.
  • Pre-Prom: Road to Reality Event - These events are a collaboration with Riverside EMS, local Coroner’s offices, local/State police, & local EMS/Fire personnel. The events showcase a car accident utilizing actors from the participating school. Participants get to witness EMS/Fire extrication, field sobriety testing, Coroner’s involvement, & what happens in the ED. Additional scenes can be added including a court room scene and/or funeral. The events are typically scheduled by local high schools before Prom or Homecoming. They are a good reminder for students to make responsible choices. We have a range of guest speakers to end the event including the State’s Attorney’s office. These events are also free of charge.
  • Distracted Driving Courses - Riverside ED’s Distracted Driving classes are designed to be taught during a Driver’s Ed class at our local high schools. The class teaches newly driving students what different distractions are and how to avoid them. Students get to hear the data behind distracted driving laws and learn about what happens in the ED after a car accident.

Trauma Community Outreach Scholarship
