Breast Cancer: Screening Mammogram
Riverside recommends annual screening mammograms beginning at age 40 for all women. Talk to your doctor about getting screened earlier if you have a personal or family history of breast cancer, including the BRCA gene.
We offer all-digital mammography, including 3D mammography (tomosynthesis). This technology has been clinically proven to detect small tumors sooner than conventional mammography, with fewer follow-up tests.
If your results show anything suspicious, our breast surgeons specialize in stereotactic breast biopsy and ultrasound-guided breast biopsy, minimally invasive alternatives to surgical biopsy, to help make a diagnosis. A sample of suspect breast tissue is precisely located with a computer-guided imaging system and removed with a needle. The procedure is completed on an outpatient basis with minimal discomfort, recovery time, and fast and accurate results.
Lung Cancer: Low-Dose CT Scan
Lung cancer symptoms usually don’t appear until the disease has advanced, which is why screening is such a vital tool. For those at high risk, Riverside offers a lung screening program with low-dose CT, a groundbreaking new tool that can catch lung cancer before symptoms show. During this simple test, an X-ray machine scans the entire body, using low doses of radiation to make detailed pictures of the lung. It’s safe, painless and has proven to reduce the risk of lung cancer death by up to 20%.
Colorectal Cancer: Colonoscopy
Colon and rectal cancer screening is a way that doctors check the colon and rectum for signs of cancer or growths (called polyps) that might become cancer. It is done in people who have no symptoms and no reason to think that they have cancer. The goal is to find and remove polyps before they become cancer or to find cancer early before it grows, spreads, or causes problems.
Doctors recommend that most people begin having colon cancer screening at age 45. People who have an increased risk of getting colon cancer sometimes begin screening at a younger age. That might include people with a strong family history of colon cancer and people with diseases of the colon called "Crohn’s disease" and “ulcerative colitis.”
Common screening tests include colonoscopy, Cologuard DNA test, and Stool test for blood. Schedule an appointment with your primary care provider to determine which test is best for you.
Prostate Cancer Screening
Riverside encourages men ages older than 50 to get annual prostate cancer screenings, which can help catch this common condition early when it can be closely monitored or treated. African-American men and those with a family history of prostate cancer should be screened sooner, typically by age 40 or 45.
Riverside offers routine screenings, including a prostate-screening antigen (PSA) blood test, which looks for elevated levels of a protein that may indicate signs of cancer. Your doctor may also perform a digital rectal exam (DRE) to check the prostate for abnormalities.
