Internal Medicine
Internists (also called general internists or doctors of internal medicine) are medical doctors that specialize in the diagnosis and medical (nonsurgical treatment) of adults (generally over the age of 18).
Doctors of Internal Medicine (internists) focus on adult healthcare and a comprehensive approach to patient relationships. They treat the whole person, not just internal organs and can provide care for you for life, from late teen years through old age.
Find An Internal Medicine Provider
While an internist does not treat children, perform surgery or deliver babies, they do provide care for a wide range of conditions. If you choose an internist as your primary care provider, you will receive the benefit of their knowledge of complex conditions affecting adults.
Focused on prevention of diseases, your internist will work with to prevent the initial onset of condition and diseases. Your doctor will work with you to help manage and control risk factors like high blood pressure or cholesterol. In addition, your internist will be able to diagnose and treat chronic illnesses and situations when you may be experiencing different conditions or illnesses at the same time.
Type of Care
An internist can treat you for something as routine as the flu or fatigue or provide in-depth care for diseases such as diabetes, lung or heart disease. Internists often coordinate the many subspecialists the patient might see in the process of treating illness. Internists' patient's like knowing that they have a long-term relationship with a physician who is equipped to deal with whatever the patient brings, no matter how common or rare, or how simple or complex.
