Specialty Programs
At Riverside Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Services, we're proud to provide specialty therapy and rehabilitation programs to meet your needs. Whether it's therapy for chronic pain, an injury, illness or disability, you can expect specialized testing and individualized treatment plans from our highly trained therapists. Our goal is to help relieve your symptoms and restore your strength and function so you can get back to being you.
Chronic Pain Management
Living with chronic pain can take a toll on your body and mind. At Riverside Rehabilitation Services, we offer programs to help you find pain relief and improve your sense of well-being.
Physical Therapy: Treats pain with a variety of manual techniques, exercise, education and other therapies, such as heat, electrical stimulation and ultrasound.
Myofascial Release: A specialized technique that, combined with exercise and education, has effectively treated chronic pain that hasn't responded to conventional treatments. Care is provided by therapists with advanced certification in this technique.
Yoga Physical Therapy: Helps control chronic pain with exercise and mind-body techniques, such as meditation. Patients learn about their body types and the stressors that can increase pain. This holistic approach may be covered by private insurance companies and Medicare and Medicaid.
Integrative Physical Therapy: This branch of therapy combines traditional therapy with yoga, Ayurveda (a holistic system of medicine widely practiced in India) and other mind-body techniques to teach pain management. It is especially useful for patients who have not found relief from traditional therapy and are ready to explore alternative techniques.
Aquatic Therapy
Aquatic therapy refers to treatments or exercises in our temperature-controlled, accessible therapy pools. Warm water relaxes sore muscles and eases pressure on the spine and joints, allowing for pain-free strengthening and range-of-motion exercises. Aquatic therapy is a great treatment choice for spinal injury/disease, orthopedic conditions and obesity.
Ask your provider if aquatic therapy is a good option for you.
Lymphedema and Chronic Swelling Management
If you’re suffering from swelling caused by lymphedema, our certified therapists can develop an individualized treatment plan just for you. Although there is no cure for this chronic condition, our complete decongestive therapy and other treatment methods can reduce swelling and other unpleasant symptoms, such as pain and loss of mobility, to help improve your quality of life. Click here for more information about lymphedema from the American Physical Therapy Association.
Chronic edema is the persistent swelling of an area of the body that can develop after orthopedic procedures (such as a joint replacement) or from circulation problems. Our manual edema mobilization process, and other treatments such as kinesio taping and myofascial release, are proven effective in reducing swelling so you can enjoy better range of motion.
Return To Work Programs
Work is an important part of your life, and we realize you’d like to get back to it as quickly as possible after an injury. But like many who’ve been injured, you may feel too physically weak to return to your job. Our work conditioning and hardening programs can help increase your body's strength and conditioning. Using special tools and equipment, our therapists can simulate the repetitive or difficult tasks you do at work to prepare you for a safe reentry. Our team also performs functional testing to ensure you’re physically able to return to your job.
Spine Therapy
In addition to myofascial release, our skilled therapists use various physical and manual therapies to evaluate and treat spinal disorders.
MedX Spine Therapy: MedX equipment is designed to exercise back and neck muscles following an injury. This special equipment helps patients regain strength and motion while aligning their spine. And because it targets specific spinal muscles during exercise, patients can recover faster.
McKenzie Method Spine Therapy: Physical therapists worldwide use this highly researched therapy to evaluate and treat spinal injuries. Treatments focus on learning simple exercises and movements to do at home to get relief from symptoms.
Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) Screening
Through a comprehensive golf swing assessment, Riverside's TPI-certified physical therapists can help you uncover the mechanics of your golf swing that may be causing you pain or discomfort.
The TPI screening program at Riverside evaluates your body mechanics, mobility, stability and strength, all tailored to the physical demands of the golf swing. Screenings are done at Riverside's Orthopedic and Spine Center in Bourbonnais and Riverside's Frankfort Campus.
Golfers interested in scheduling an assessment can call (815) 802-7090, option 4 for Bourbonnais Physical Therapy, or (815) 464-5440 for Riverside’s Frankfort Campus Physical Therapy.
Please note: this is not a performance-enhancing screening, but it is geared toward individuals wanting to identify swing mechanics that may be causing negative physical effects on their bodies.
Vestibular Rehabilitation
Have you fallen in the past year? Do you experience dizziness or feel unsteady at times? If you answered “yes,” you may have a balance problem. Fortunately, most balance, dizziness and/or vertigo disorders can improve with physical therapy. Using specialized, exercise-based vestibular therapy, our therapists will work with you to improve your balance and reduce your risk of falling.
You might also benefit from audiology testing to confirm the cause of your problem. If you’d like to consider this, please call Riverside Audiology at (815) 932-2541. For more information, download our Balance and Vestibular Rehabilitation and Meniere's Disease brochures.
